Course Outline

This course is directed at those taking charge of medical care onboard a ship.

Content & Objectives

The course aims to develop the competence required  to be able to diagnose medical problems aboard ship, provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board and participate in co-ordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships.

Subjects on the course will include

  • Identification of symptoms based on the concepts of clinical examination and medical history
  • Protection against infection and spread of diseases
  • Appropriate treatment of an injury or condition
  • The dosage and application of drugs and medication
  • Prompt recognition of changes in a patient’s condition
  • Clinical examination procedures
  • The method and preparation for a medical evacuation
  • Procedures for seeking radio medical advice

Learning Mode

The course is run over 5 days at the Red Ensign training facility in Cowes and will include theory and practical sessions.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 18 years of age and must have received approved or recognised training in Medical First Aid on Board Ship (in accordance with Section A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code), and been issued with a certificate, within the previous five years.

You should be aware that this advanced module is a substantial step up from the compulsory STCW Elementary First Aid certification that is mandatory for all seafarers.


The cost of this course is £640.00 inc VAT.

We offer accommodation on-board our ship, Sea Trident at very advantageous rates, when booked with the course.
