Course Outline

This 1-day refresher training is intended for seafarers who will be required to take charge of a fast rescue boat (FRB) in emergency situations in accordance with

  • SOLAS regulations
  • STCW convention and code
  • The Merchant Shipping (Life Saving Appliances) Regulations 1986
  • The Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997

On successful completion of the training and assessment, the trainees will have knowledge of the construction and function of different types of fast rescue boats and associated equipment and rescue procedures.

Content & Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to

  • Take charge of a fast rescue boat (FRB) during and after launch
  • Understand the construction and outfit of FRBs and individual items of their equipment
  • Know the particular characteristics and facilities of FRBs
  • Understand safety precautions during launch and recovery of an FRB
  • Know the procedures for righting a capsized FRB
  • Be able to handle an FRB in prevailing and adverse weather and sea conditions
  • Understand navigational and safety equipment available in an FRB
  • Search patterns and environmental factors affecting their execution
  • Assessment of the readiness of FRBs and related equipment for immediate use
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, emergency repair, normal inflation and deflation of buoyancy compartment of inflated FRBs
  • Operate an FRB engine, including methods of starting and operating an FRB engine and its accessories.

Learning Mode

The course comprises hands-on practical use of FRBs and participation in physically demanding in-water scenarios in and around the Solent waters.The crew's competence is assessed through their active participation during the practical sessions and theory sessions that are taught in the classroom.

Candidates must also take a final written examination which has a pass mark of 80%.

Entry Requirements

You should be over 18 years of age and be in possession of an existing STCW Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats certificate to take advantage of the reduced price for the refresher training.

  • Certificate of Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat (OPITO or TEMPSC are not acceptable)
  • Certificate to Medical Standards Section B-VI/2/1 (ENGI) or other national equivalent to Merchant Navy standards - training attended within the last 5 years
  • Identification is required either through Discharge Book Number or other national identification


This course is included within the cost of our STCW Refresher training (under the Manila Amendments) however if you would like to book the stand-alone course of 1 day's training, the cost for this course is now on offer, for less than half-price at £250 inc VAT.
