This Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (PSSR) course is designed to give all persons intending to go to sea, a basic induction in safety procedures and accident prevention and to familiarise them with the working conditions and working environment on board merchant vessels. It is offered as part of the STCW Basic Training Week but it can also be booked on its own.


This course will cover

  • Background
  • Shipboard organisation/General shipboard terms
  • Comply with emergency procedures
  • Observe safe working practices
  • Understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue
  • Pollution prevention
  • Understand orders and communicate with others in relation to shipboard duties
  • Social responsibility

Learning Mode

This course is taught at the Red Ensign training facility in Cowes.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal requirements for this course however you should be over 18 years of age.
