Course Outline
On completion of this training, you will have learnt the ways in which fires are caused and the precautions to be taken to minimise the risk of fire on ships. You will also be able to:
- Maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fires
- Fight and extinguish fires using fire fighting apparatus and appliances provided on board
- Act as a member of a fire party, including use of self-contained breathing apparatus
Content & Objectives
This course will cover topics including
- Minimising the risk of fire
- Maintaining a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
- Fighting and extinguishing a fire
- Shipboard fire-fighting organisation
- Location of fire-fighting appliances and emergency escape routes
- The elements of fire and explosion (the fire triangle)
- Types and sources of ignition
- Flammable material, fire hazards and spread of fire
- Fire and smoke detection and automatic alarm systems
- Classification of fire and applicable extinguishing agents
Learning Mode
This course is taught at the Red Ensign training facility in Cowes both in the classroom and using our onsite firefighting facilities.
Entry Requirements
You should be over 18 years of age and be in possession of an existing STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting certificate to take advantage of the reduced price for the refresher training - training attended within the last 5 years.
Learners must be physically fit as the practical aspects of the training and the physically demanding nature of some of the exercises involving live fires and the use of breathing apparatus. Learners will be required to complete and sign a confidential medical declaration informing us of any health problems that we would have to take into account. We reserve the right to carry out a risk assessment where an individual provides us with doubt of fitness to participate.

The price for this course is £260 incl. VAT.
Please note that you will be joining the STCW Basic Safety Training group over 2 days and we run this training every week of the year (usually on Wed and Thursday)
