Course Outline
This online course introduces you to your VHF and GMDSS radio sets, and to the procedures which are internationally recognised for use on the Short Range Radio airwaves.
The course follows the short range certification required to achieve the qualification of Restricted (VHF) Radio Operator which is a legal requirement for using or overseeing a VHF radio on board a leisure or small commerical vessel.
Content & Objectives
The course will cover the following
- Using the set
- The radio alphabet
- Ofcom and radio licensing law
- Standard calling procedures
- Specified channels
- Coastguard use – mayday, pan-pan and routine traffic
- DSC use – MOB button & acknowledging information
Learning Mode
This is an online course that can be undertaken in your own time. The online session will take you through the course subjects in a lively and interesting way and, when you are ready, you can take the questionnaire to check your learning.
On successful completion of the questionnaire you will be invited to print out a certificate proving your competency and you will then need to book a time to come to Red Ensign (or another RYA centre that offers this facility) for your final theory and practical assessments.
The price for the assessment and licence fee is an additional £60 and this is paid directly to the RYA (by debit/credit card or cheque) when you attend the centre.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal requirements for this course however you should be over 18 years of age and should bring a passport sized photo for your licence.
Costs
The price for this course is £60 inc VAT.
A separate payment of £70 will need to be made directly to the RYA for assessment and your licence by either debit/credit card or cheque on the day of the examination.
