Course Outline

This course will provide the necessary knowledge and information to those wishing to further their knowledge and those progressing through their Merchant Navy Deck Officer training or for those wishing to progress from the RYA Yachtmaster to the commercial Master 200gt/OOW 500gt or above.

Content & Objectives

Upon successful completion of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) GOC course, holders will be qualified and proficient in operating satellite communication equipment, radio communication equipment and operate distress equipment. The GMDSS GOC will qualify the holder to use licensed equipment in the A1, A2, A3 and A4 sea areas.

The course will include

  • GMDSS regulations & procedures
  • SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and the practical applications of radio
  • Demonstration and practical use of all GMDSS equipment.
  • Thorough & detailed instruction and practical scenarios

Learning Mode

This course is classroom based at our training centre in Cowes and your assessment will be conducted by an independent assessor. Length of course – 8 days including examination.

Entry Requirements

You should be over 18 years of age, have a good grasp of the English language and understand the phonetic alphabet. Any previous exposure to radios and distress equipment will be advantageous but not necessary.


This course costs £1275.00

The package price is £1595.00 inc VAT (course plus full-board accommodation)


Accommodation is provided onboard the M/V Sea Trident, moored alongside Red Ensign Training in West Cowes. Offered on a full board or B&B basis, cabins with either a shared communal washroom or a shared en-suite (subject to availability) Please check availability by calling us on 01983 294088. 
Should you not wish to stay onboard M/V Sea Trident it is possible to make your own accommodation arrangement, we can of course assist you with a list of local Crew Houses, B&Bs and Hotels to suit all budgets.
