Seafarers Awareness Week 20-26th June 2016
Seafarers Awareness Week, 20-26 June, will promote UK maritime job opportunities, at sea and ashore. It will also focus on increasing young children’s knowledge of the UK’s historic and ongoing ‘island nation’ dependence on seafarers.
Building on the success of last year’s awareness-raising campaign, Seafarers Awareness Week will publicise helpful sources of employment information, including Careers at Sea, Seavision and the Maritime Skills Alliance.
A parallel promotion will invite all UK primary schools to organise ‘non uniform days’, with children dressing up in nautically-inspired costumes. A new infographic – kindly sponsored by Fyffes – will be created to appeal specifically to young children, showing how the UK relies on seafarers for vital overseas trade.
Reflecting the support provided by Seafarers UK to a diverse range of beneficiary charities, Seafarers Awareness Week will as usual be a ‘pan-maritime’ campaign, promoting the Royal Navy, all branches of the Merchant Navy – inc. ferries and cruise ships – plus superyachts, workboats of all kinds and the UK’s commercial fishing fleets.
This year, the IMO’s worldwide Day of the Seafarer and UK Armed Forces Day both fall on Saturday 25 June, the latter when opportunities to serve in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary will be promoted.
