Red Ensign Founder and MD retires after 20 years at the Helm

All News Events Courses General News Tuesday, 31st July 2018

Andrew Dale, founder and Managing Director (MD) of Red Ensign Limited, has announced his retirement as MD and has informed the Board of Directors of his desire to step down in September.

The board of directors has appointed Graeme Johnston as Director of Operations to manage the business whilst a decision on an appointment of a new MD is made.

Although Mr Dale will step away from operations he will be available for advice and support at the request of the Board of Directors.

Andy co founded Red Ensign back in 1998 with the idea for maritime training after running a busy water taxi business with several boats on the river Medina in Cowes. After unsuccessfully trying to find organisations to train his crew he recognised a huge gap in the market. Andy felt teaching was something he could do and enjoy doing so he trained and qualified to become a teacher. Andy then taught others to be able to deliver the training and so it began.

During his time as Managing Director, the business has seen significant client, recruitment and profit growth, and has received various accolades recognising customer service, operational excellence, and high recognition in its industry.

On announcing his retirement Andy said, “I’ve been privileged to lead the UK’s best maritime training company supported by a great team and both from a professional and a personal perspective, this is the right moment to hand the leadership reins of the company to someone else. Our strong pipeline and the strategic moves we have taken to focus the company have put Red Ensign on a strong path for the future. On the personal side, after 20 wonderful years it’s time to start enjoying life a little more and transfer the helm to a new leader who can take the business forward.  The future of Red Ensign is positive, exciting times lay ahead and I wish the team every success.”

“This announcement brings mixed feelings for the management board; staff and we are sure many of our customers but Andy’s health following a recent car accident has been a major factor in himself recognising the right time to move aside and let someone else take the helm and enjoy the task of navigating the business through its next phase of growth.” Says Lee Edwards (FD)

“Andy has been the face of the business for over 20 years, his contribution has been huge and he will be missed on a day-to-day basis although it’s clear that Andy leaves the business in a fantastic position to continue with this success into the future.  The existing management board will continue with the work Andy started and we anticipate a smooth transition as Andy built a strong leadership team and recruited Graeme Johnston to lead on operations with retirement in mind and that Red Ensign will be well positioned to continue its momentum." Continued Lee Edwards (FD)

Graeme Johnston has held numerous leadership positions and strategy roles in the maritime sector. Before joining Red ensign in this year, Graeme was the Operations Director of another MCA training establishment after many years of training into the maritime sector.

Graeme added, "The strength of Red Ensign is our ability to train at all levels, across the board. We are the ‘professional’s choice’ for mariners and we will continue to deliver world class training as well as expanding the offering of training packages.”

As a result, the Board of Directors is confident that Graeme is the right choice to lead Red Ensign on our expected next growth phase, driving innovation and further strengthening our competitive position."

Graeme said, "I would like to express my gratitude to Andy and the Board of Directors. I feel honoured and humbled to be asked to lead this business through the next stages of growth. We will continue our legacy of bringing leading innovation to marine and maritime around the world. With our recent innovations, our strong pipeline, broad capabilities, world-class team, and committed people, I am very confident about our future."
