Red Ensign Apprenticeship Open Day

All News Events Tuesday, 7th March 2017

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, Red Ensign Ltd. is holding an open day on Tuesday 7th March 10am – 4pm.

The purpose of this is to give the public, but in particular young people, some ideas of what a career at sea entails, the training involved and – of particular importance – ongoing career opportunities in later life.

To be eligible for an apprenticeship at sea you have to be physically fit, you will need to pass a Maritime & Coastguard Agency medical (it’s called an ENG 1) and maritime regulations require that apprentices are 18 or over at the start of the training.

Once candidates are selected and the medical is passed, training will start in earnest. We work out a programme with the employer that is tailored to suit the shipping company’s operational requirements and training needs of the apprentices. The training period is typically 12-24 months.

Training will involve early industry familiarisation, periods at sea, home leave and participation in the various short courses, such as sea survival and firefighting, that are required by law before you can become a fully qualified seafarer. As an apprentice you are an “employed” person and will receive a regular wage from your employer.

So far Red Ensign has successfully launched some 15 apprentices in the last two years as fully qualified seafarers. The apprentices have received either an MCA Certificate of Competency as an Able Seafarer or in some cases an MCA Boatmaster Licence, both of which are essential career passports to the working world at sea.

Come and find out what it will be like to be a maritime apprentice and talk to the people who will help train you. There will also be a chance to meet with apprentices past and present, former seafarers and if you are lucky maybe an opportunity to be introduced to a potential employer.
