Today: Use of the ROV to maintain Sea Trident!

All News General News Thursday, 9th March 2017

As part of its ongoing maintenance it is important to know the underwater condition of our training ship Sea Trident. One way of achieving this is to use an underwater inspection vehicle – an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). The ROV is equipped with 3D sonar, high intensity underwater floodlights and camera with all imagery and data transmitted as a live feed back to the operator. The images and data are saved and can be later reviewed as both stills and as a video. Decisions can then be made as to what further action if any is required as part of the maintenance programme.

Prior to launching the ROV it is important other users in the harbour know of the operation, a full work plan has been submitted to the local Harbour Master’s office in Cowes and Sea Trident flies the international code of signals two letter hoist RY (Romeo Yankee) in order that passing ships know to proceed at slow speed. The workboat MSV Explorer is secured alongside Sea Trident acting as the work platform from which the ROV is launched. And lovely Roxy, is here to help!

ROV team make final checks prior to launching the ROV from the deck of support vessel msv Explorer. Colin is giving us the thumbs up!

Once in the water ROV operations centre on the ROV operator who will control the actual progress of the ROV using remote control and live feed imagery. Prior to commencing operations the ROV team has been briefed as to which areas of the ship are to be inspected. Here ROV team member Roxy can be seen marking up the anode plan of Sea Trident in order the condition of each sacrificial anode can be checked and recorded.
