STCW Refresher Training (STCW Update Training)

All News Courses Friday, 15th January 2016

The Manila Amendments as part of the STCW 2010 Convention are changing the STCW training pipeline to ensure that all seafarers remain safe at sea and maintain their high standards of training.

The Manila Amendments of the STCW Convention state that certain elements of STCW training must be refreshed every 5 years after 2017 and that if a seafarer’s training was done pre 2012 then they would be subject to refreshing their certificates before 2017.

The STCW courses that are required to be updated are:

STCW Personal Survival Techniques
STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat
STCW Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat

In order to be applicable for refresher training, seafarers must provide their previous STCW certificates and seafarers are eligible for reduced refresher training is they can provide documentation showing evidence of a seafarers exercises and drills. Full information on the requirements for training can be found in MIN 469 here

Please note that all prerequisites for STCW training still exist therefore in order to undertake STCW Advanced Fire Fighting a seafarer must first have a valid STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting certificate. Furthermore a to undertake STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat training a seafarer must first have a valid STCW Personal Survival Techniques and finally a seafarer must have a valid STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat certificate to undertake STCW Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boat training.
