Hammerhead Crane, our “neighbour” – a piece of history

This week, the County Press dedicated an article to the iconic Hammerhead Crane, which is situated right next to our training centre: “How crane lifted war effort”. The reason the iconic hammerhead crane towers over Cowes today dates back to 1911, when the Chilean Navy ordered six Almirante Lynch class fast destroyers – the biggest in the world in their day.

It was a great opportunity for the engineers at J. Samuel White’s to demonstrate  their warship design and building capability and the company purchased the 80-ton crane from Babcock and Wilcox in Scotland.

The ship order also proved opportune for the Royal Navy. Four destroyers still under construction were commandeered to bolster our forces after war was declared.

The Cowes Hammerhead Crane Trust volunteers who want the crane fully restored as “living, functioning crane – not a lifeless static display piece” charts the fate of the six Island-made destroyers.
