Level 3 Diploma in Maritime Studies

The level 3 Diploma is intended for people in the maritime sector and has been developed in conjunction with the Maritime Skills Alliance to ensure it is fit for purpose.

The Diploma in Maritime Studies: Officer of the Watch on Merchant vessels of less than 500 gross tonnage (Near Coastal) at QCF level 3 will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as:

  • assisting with bridge watch-keeping duties
  • steering and maintaining course
  • mooring, anchoring and securing operations
  • following safe and environmentally friendly working practices

A deck officer assigned with the duties of watch keeping and navigation on a ship’s bridge is known as the officer of the watch (OOW). While keeping watch on the bridge, the OOW is the representative of the ship’s master and has total responsibility for the safe and smooth navigation of the ship.

Level 3 Certificate in Maritime Studies: Officer of the Watch on Merchant Vessels of less than 500 gross tonnage (Near Coastal)

Entry Requirements No general entry requirements however entrants need to be willing to spend periods away from home on board a vessel as required and to pass a seafarers’ medical examination

Cost    Funded as part of the Maritime Studies Apprenticeship. Employer contribution may be required depending on age.
